Updated UW Field Operations Safety Manual now available

If your research work include operations out in the field, download the latest version of the UW Field Operations Safety Manual, which provides updated information on state regulations, UW policies, safe work practices, and document templates.

Field research conducted at the UW may include drone work, rocket tests, water sample collection, boat trips, and wildlife observation, to name just a few examples.

Field sites may include field stations, natural reserves, public lands or parks, wilderness areas, coastline or waterways, or more controlled sites, such as construction areas, excavations, or mines. Each of these environments pose unique considerations for the health and safety of the individuals working and teaching there.

EH&S guidance is focused on policies and risk management practices relevant to field courses and research, international trips, research expeditions, and other outdoor excursions.

You can find detailed information about field safety practices, in addition to the manual, on the EH&S Field Operations Safety webpage. Resources listed there include a risk assessment tool and guidelines, fieldwork safety plan templates, and training log templates.

EH&S is committed to supporting a safe and healthful environment for all individuals associated with field operations, including students, faculty, staff, and volunteers. Approval of risk assessments and safety plans is provided by the supervisors and departments of the research group. However, EH&S is always available to review and give feedback on your risk assessments or safety plans. Email labcheck@uw.edu for a consultation.

Use these updated guidelines and resources to ensure safe, successful field courses and research trips!
