Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) for Researchers Online
Intended audience
This course is required for researchers who are assigned work activities with a reasonably anticipated potential for exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials that may contain bloodborne pathogens (BBP). This training is required annually.
Personnel are required to complete this training initially and annually during compensated work hours. EH&S is available to answer questions about this training Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling (206) 221-7770.
University personnel required to take this training are also included in the University’s Bloodborne Pathogens Program. Refer to the UW Core Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan and your site-specific Exposure Control Plan for safety practices in your work location.
Non-research personnel are required to complete Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) for Non-Researchers Online.
Description
This course teaches how bloodborne pathogens are transmitted and the risks they present, how you can prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the research environment, and actions you should take if you have been exposed to bloodborne pathogens. It gives details that are specific to the University of Washington, including what to do if you are exposed.
Important course instructions
You will be directed to the UW Hepatitis B Vaccine Form at the end of the course.
Personnel are required to complete the Hepatitis B Vaccine Form within 10 days of assignment to a position with potential exposure to BBP and before work with materials that may contain BBP. If you choose to receive the vaccine, it will be given at no cost to you through a University Employee Health Center. If you decide to decline the vaccine, you can change your mind at any time. You can find more information about the hepatitis B vaccine on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, and you can contact the UW Employee Health Center to speak with a nurse if you have any questions. You can access the online Hepatitis B Vaccine Form anytime.
Students who are not University employees should consult with their healthcare provider before receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine.
