New fieldwork resources for researchers

If your research work includes field operations, visit the new Field Operations Safety webpage on the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) website for new resources to conduct work safely in the field. The new field operations safety guidance is focused on policies and risk management practices relevant to field courses and research, international trips, research expeditions, and other outdoor excursions.

You can find detailed information about field safety practices in the new UW Field Operations Safety Manual, including state regulations, UW policies, safe work practices, and document templates. In addition to the manual, the new webpage offers the following resources:

  • Risk assessment guidelines
  • Fieldwork Safety Plan templates
  • Training log template

Field research conducted at the UW may include drone work, rocket tests, water sample collection, boat trips, and wildlife observation, to name just a few examples.

Field sites may include field stations, natural reserves, public lands or parks, wilderness areas, coastline or waterways, or more controlled sites such as construction areas, excavations, or mines. Each of these environments pose unique considerations for the health and safety of the individuals working and teaching there.

EH&S is committed to supporting a safe and healthful environment for all individuals associated with field operations, including students, personnel and volunteers. Approval of risk assessments and safety plans is provided by the supervisors and departments of the research group. However, EH&S is always available to review and give feedback on your risk assessments and safety plans. Email labcheck@uw.edu for a consultation.

Please use these new guidelines and resources to ensure safe, successful field courses and research trips!
