Select the correct PPE to protect against eye hazards
Several recent incidents have occurred at the University in which a chemical or infectious material splashed or splattered into the eye because the individual was not wearing the correct type of eye protection for the hazards they faced, or not wearing eye protection at all. You should always evaluate your workplace for potential eye hazards so you can select the appropriate safety equipment.

Institutional Chemical and Physical Safety Committee
The Institutional Chemical and Physical Safety Committee (ICAPS) is one of several University-wide committees charged with promoting a safe working environment at the University of Washington (UW). The committee has specific oversight responsibilities for chemical and physical safety in all research and teaching activities conducted in University owned and operated laboratories, and in field research.

Make your electronic Chemical Hygiene Plan
Keeping your safety documents up to date and easily accessible are key for staying safe.
Creating Electronic Chemical Hygiene Plans
Chemical Hygiene Plans (CHPs) include lab-specific information and relevant documents in addition to the UW Laboratory Safety Manual (LSM) provided by EH&S. This information must be reviewed at least annually and is necessary to fulfill WAC 296-828-20005. Read the Creatiing Electronic Chemical Hygiene Plans focus sheet for more information and instructions on creating one for your lab.
New fieldwork resources for researchers
If your research work includes field operations, visit the new Field Operations Safety webpage on the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) website for new resources to conduct work safely in the field. The new field operations safety guidance is focused on policies and risk management practices relevant to field courses and research, international trips, research expeditions, and other outdoor excursions.
